E3 Preview 2005

By now the game called RPG Maker is a known entity. Players – if they can be so called – use the PlayStation 2 title to create worlds, adventures and even the dialogues for their own stories. If there was a recurring complaint about RPG Maker 2, it was that most of the effort to create that story took too long.

Move over RPG Maker 2 and make room for RPG Maker 3, a quicker and more polished PS2 title from Enterbrain and Agetec. The PS2 title is slated for release in August and Agetec’s Dave Silviera termed this title “very easy” to use.

And “the game you can make with this looks like a high-quality RPG,” he said.

Features include an easy-to-use toolset, the ability to transform 2D instructions into 3D worlds quickly, the ability to populate towns in real time, a large cast of characters, animations and weapons, a bonus six-hour game called “Dear Brave Heart.”

Essentially, RPG Maker 3 allows players to create interactive stories, complete with maps, monsters, treasure and three-dimensional worlds easily and quickly. Not only can players design towns, but they can complete dungeons with traps and script events.

There are more than 3,000 animations and dynamic camera angles as well.

It is “completely more accessible,” Silviera said, while adding that Agetec is “going to do our best to really support the game.” He admitted that RPG Maker 2 was hard to make a game, but “this one is fun!”

Agetec took feedback from RPG Maker 2 fans and implemented those comments into the new iteration of the franchise. Among those including streamlining the effort to make a game, adding ease of use and almost instantaneous rendering.

“You can’t really mess this up,” Silviera said.
