Burnout Revenge Preview
The Burnout series has long been a staple in the racing scene by giving gamers a fun and unique racing experience combining a blurring sense of speed and spectacular crashes. Last year’s game, Burnout 3: Takedown, was widely considered to be the best racing game of the year and a few critics even felt that it was one of the best racing titles ever. With that in mind, it would be logical to assume that developer Criterion would be hard pressed to come up with a title that improves upon their already great formula. However, Burnout Revenge looks to do just that, by giving players more of what they want, incredible crashes and fast racing. Plus, the game now features a focus on aggression and being able to battle it out with the other racers in the level. That said, Burnout Revenge is shaping up to be an action packed racer that builds upon its already excellent predecessor.
Burnout Revenge features eight new locations inspired by real life areas. The new places have a more exposed feeling to them, as they have new elements like jumps and ramps to give you different ways of completing each one. The developers took great pains to make sure that the locations felt like the real thing, but not to the point where they’d be impossible and no fun to navigate.
One of the biggest changes to the gameplay dynamic is the fact that same way traffic doesn’t damage your car. Furthermore, you can use same way traffic as a weapon by knocking a car into your opponent’s line of drive and forcing them to crash into it, counting as a takedown. Another great concept is the aftertouch explosion, where you can detonate your car on purpose during a crash in order to get the drop on your foes and get an aftertouch takedown by being in the right place at the right time.
Among the new modes in Burnout Revenge is the traffic attack mode, in which you take out as many same way traffic vehicles as possible before your timer runs out. Since you gain a little bit of time for each car that you take out, a good player could extend this mode indefinitely.
Burnout Revenge hits this fall.
