Area 51 Preview
Midway
hit gold when they reimagined one of their successful arcade franchises a few
years back with Spy Hunter. Now, Midway are taking another one of their arcade
games in a new direction with the release of Area 51. In case you don’t know,
Area 51 was a light-gun shooter back in the early to mid 90’s and had gamers
shooting up hordes of realistic multimedia rendered alien zombies on a fixed
rail-style progression. Midway’s remake will be a First Person Shooter, and
will basically follow the same storyline, in which a counter-terrorist unit
investigating strange goings on at the infamous Air Force Base known as Area 51
get attacked and are forced to fight their way through hordes of zombies and
alien creatures.
Area 51 will have five different environments in which you battle it out, including a variety of indoor and outdoor levels (and even one on an alien ship.) As you progress through the game, you actually begin to mutate into an alien yourself and gain access to alien weaponry.
Even in early stages, the game has some pretty great graphics, some of the best yet on the PS2. The character models were great looking and were well animated (complete with rag-doll physics). The lighting effects were also fantastic and overall, the game had a great look and atmosphere.
Area 51 is scheduled for release Q4 2004.
