Battlefield 2: Modern Combat Preview
Well there isn't a shortage of military based
warfare games out there, so it really takes that something special to break
free from the crowd and really "wow" the gaming public. So with that in mind,
I received my preview copy of Battlefield 2 and eagerly put it in my PS2.
Now, I should tell you that I really enjoyed the
Socom series and instantly felt at home logging online to play Battlefield 2,
the preview copy only allowed for online action and even then it didn't
feature all of what the game will ultimately contain. The first thing I
noticed was the FPS controls, fairly smooth with an easy interface. I can't
say it's the tightest game I've ever played but I'm sure the final product
will sharpen things up, but as it is, it's still has fairly clean
movement. Guns are varied and authentic and the game features several
vehicles that you can control with relative ease.
Essentially, the game is just like the PC version,
most notably though, the graphics do suffer from some slight
breakdown. This is fairly indicative of any game that started on the PC and
gets transferred to a console version. Those who never played the PC version
will find the graphics more then adequate as it is. In this demo, you can
only play the "Conquest" mode. Essentially you select a starting point on the
map and try to capture one of the conquest points on the map. Once you
actually take over a conquest point, you then must strategize with your fellow
gamers and decide whether or not to try and take over another point, or
shell-up and defend the point you already control. It's pretty clever even
though it's a tried and true form of gaming.
Now what I like, was the fact that if you were
killed, you didn't have to wait for the game to finish, you could merely
select anyone of the different soldier types and relaunch from your original
starting point. If you found that playing as a straight up soldier kept
getting you killed, then you could select a sniper character and use the long
range sniper rifle to take out that crazy rocket launching dude who took you
out three times in a row. I know this type of respawing has been done in the
past, but I must say that it was still done quite well.
Back to the in-game action, Battlefield 2 does a
bang up job of really putting you into the action, I love the idea of hopping
in a tank and laying waste to a entire opposing force. Of course doing that
would either be incredibly lucky given the game's spawning point dynamic. But
regardless, the game has a real nifty touch to it regarding those massive
weapons. When they fire, a sonic wave of power can be seen and presumably
felt when a weapon hit its target, just like the real deal if those news
footage clips are to be believed.
I didn't have any problems with the DNAS server
the first night I played and thought to myself "sweet", things are looking up
as the Sony server has been plagued with bugs since it's inception. But that
second night, I must have gotten kicked four times in a row. Not that this
has anything to do with the game, we all know that the problems that broadband
connections can have are numerous. But in doing a little research,
my "kicked" problems were not anything new, and will probably need to be
addressed prior to launch.
But at the end of the day, Battlefield 2 is
looking like another massive hit for the system. I'm looking forward to this
title in the worst way and can't wait to play the full version. With the
level of depth that this game has, I suspect it will be the new standard
in Military online console games.
